Happy New (Academic) Year! We hope you had a great spring break and are raring to go. This newsletterβthe first of four seasonal editions for 2023βoutlines our major plans for the year, highlights key achievements from 2022, and provides essential SIG details.
π Plans for 2023
π Publications Updates (Philip Head)
Thanks to a research grant obtained by David Kluge, two PIE publications are being mailed to members in print form this week:
- Performance in Education Review 2020: Collected papers from past PIE SIG conference presentations.
- Classroom Resources Volume 2: Practical classroom activities for teachers using PIE methods.
New Rolling Submissions Policy:
- Year-Round Submissions: We are now accepting submissions for Mask & Gavel and Classroom Resources year-round.
- Faster CV Publishing: Peer-reviewed articles will be posted immediately to our website upon completion.
- Biennial Volumes: Online papers will be gathered into a bound print volume every two years.

π€ Upcoming Conferences (David Kluge)
In addition to participating in PanSIG2023 and JALT2023, PIE SIG is sponsoring three conferences this year:
π Research & Resources Database Project (Dawn Kobayashi)
We are launching a two-stage resource initiative across performance categories (drama, music, dance, spoken word, film, etc.):
- Stage 1 (Public Page): Creating a curated web directory of books, websites, journals, and organizations.
- Stage 2 (Members-Only Database): Building an accessible journal article repository.
β Weekly Social Zoom Meetings (David Kluge)
Join us every Friday evening from 19:30 to 21:30 JST for informal discussions on PIE topics. Zoom invitation links are sent weekly via email.
π 2022 Highlights & Long-Term Vision
π 2022 Accomplishments
- Publications: Released Mask & Gavel Vol. 10, Classroom Resources Vol. 2, and Performance in Education Review Vol. 1.
- Conferences: Co-sponsored three successful conferences in Gero, Gifu (Jan 14β15), Sapporo (Feb 4β5), and Okinawa (Mar 3β5), along with SIG forums at PanSIG2022 and JALT2022.
π‘ Long-Term Publishing Projects
Two major ongoing initiatives are being developed for the coming years:
- PIE Publishing & Bookstore: Cataloging and selling member-authored PIE textbooks via Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
- Scripts Repository: Publishing seasonal drama and readers theatre scripts (including simplified Shakespeare adaptations) via KDP or free downloads.
