Happy New (Academic) Year! We hope you had a great spring break and are raring to go. This newsletter, the first of four this year (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) includes plans for 2023 (networking events, future conferences, publications, and projects), news from 2022 (elections, past conferences, publications), and basic information. If you have any original opinion, book review, or teacher life hack that you would like to share in this newsletter, send it to David Kluge at jaltpiesig@gmail.com.

### **PLANS for 2023**

#### **Publications Chair Philip Head**

Dear fellow PIE SIG members,

I am pleased to announce that for the first time, two PIE publications will be made available to PIE SIG members in print form. Thanks to a research grant obtained by David Kluge, the *Performance in Education Review 2020* (collected papers from presentations at previous PIE SIG conferences) and *Classroom Resources Volume 2* (containing practical classroom ideas for teachers looking to use PIE activities in their classroom) will be made sent to you this week. These two publications represent a wonderful collection of writing from our members, as well as the hard work of the editorial teams behind them. Hopefully, these will be the first of many future publications from our SIG to appear in print.

I would also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know about some recent changes to how PIE SIG handles publications. We have decided to begin accepting submissions for *Mask & Gavel* and *Classroom Resources*throughout the year, rather than at a specific deadline. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and edited as before, but they will immediately be made available on our website once they are finalized. Finalized papers will be collected into a single volume to be published every two years instead of yearly. These changes should result in your research becoming available to the public (and added to your CV) more quickly, while also allowing more flexibility regarding submission times. Please see [https://jaltpiesig.org/publications/](https://jaltpiesig.org/publications/)
for more details or send me a message at [piesigpublications@gmail.com](mailto:piesigpublications@gmail.com)
if you have any questions or would like to make a submission.

Finally, I would like to ask anyone who has done a presentation related to PIE to consider submitting it to one of our publications for consideration.

*NOTE: The seasonal newsletters will serve as our annual publications and will in the future include short content and opinion articles as well as news.*

#### **Conferences Chair David Kluge**

This year the PIE SIG is planning to participate in PanSIG2023 and JALT2023. In addition, we plan to sponsor three conferences:

1. Nagoya 2. Nagano 3. Online

Stay tuned to our [website](https://jaltpiesig.org/conferences-events/)
, [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/groups/jaltpie)
, and email for notices about the Call for Papers and Registration.

#### **Research and Resources Chair Dawn Kobayashi**

Hello PIE SIG members, this is Dawn Kobayashi, and I’m writing to let you know about an exciting project we have started to share valuable resources. Our resource project will be in two stages; the first stage is to create a public resource page on our website of useful books, websites, journals, and organizations that would be beneficial to PIE teacher/researchers. We want to share both research-based and practice-based resources connected with any of the methods that fit under our performance in education umbrella: drama, music, dance, spoken word, film, and so on.

The second stage will be to create a unique, members-only database of journal articles that we can access and add to. More news about that in the coming months, but until then, please think of any great articles that you want to share.

First, we want to get the public resource page on the website up and running.

So, if you know of a great book or website that has helped you with your lessons or research, please fill in this simple [Google form](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfXmgt_RzTkG-OUAKgJLGEFDoA5-ataw45xQjig4h1M9Ey32A/viewform)
so we can consider it for inclusion! Remember: PIE is best shared!

#### **Social Chair David Kluge**

Every Friday evening from 7:30 to 9:30, the PIE SIG will sponsor a Zoom meeting for members to come together to chat or discuss any PIE topic they would like. You will be notified by email each week with the Zoom link. You may reply to the email requesting that you would like to be taken off the PIE SIG Zoom mailing list at any time.

### **NEWS from 2022**

#### **Coordinator David Kluge**

This year was quite busy for the PIE SIG. We had three [publications](https://jaltpiesig.org/publications/)
: Volume 10 of *Mask & Gavel*(the official publication of the SIG), Volume 2 of *Classroom Resources* (PIE teaching activities), and the first volume of *Performance in Education Review* (articles based on presentations at recent PIE SIG conferences). In addition to the PanSIG2022 and JALT2022 PIE SIG forums, we co-sponsored three successful [conferences](https://jaltpiesig.org/conferences-events/)
: Gero, Gifu (January 14-15); Sapporo (February 4-5, during the Snow Festival); and Okinawa (March 3-5). At the end of 2022, we had the election of [officers](https://jaltpiesig.org/about/)
, listed at the end of this newsletter. Notice there are some positions that have no name attached. If you are interested in volunteering for a SIG post, let us know at [jaltpiesig@gmail.com](mailto:jaltpiesig@gmail.com)
.

### **PLANS for the Future**

#### **Coordinator David Kluge**

In addition to our continuing excellent publications, exciting conferences, and useful resources and references project described in this newsletter, two related projects I would like to start and continue through the years is the Performance in Education Publishing and Bookstore where we have a catalog of PIE textbooks written by our members and published and sold through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. The second publishing project on Kindle Direct Publishing or provided free for download on our website is to have drama and readers theatre scripts on seasonal topics and other interesting themes, such as easy adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. Sharpen your quill pens!
